Vanimo to Jayapura in Irian Jaya.

We arrived for lunch in Vanimo in the far north west of PNG and lunched at the
Sandaun Hotel - phone [675]871000 / 871040 fax 871119
or Box 35 Vanimo ,
Sandaun Province,
PNG
where Marcus Cullinan -the Manager , had organised a Banana Boat - the 'Ella Queen' and 2 Papuan guides to take us to Jayapura .
We applied for our visas at the Indonesian embassy across the road and after or 2 hour boat trip along a very spectacular coastline we arrived in the beautiful harbour city of Jayapura late in the evening.

The next morning our guides took us into town to clear imigration . We then hired taxis and toured around the city . We visited the markets and lookouts as well as the Lake Sentani . That night we went back into town and feasted at the street food stalls on fantastic seafood and other Indonesian food and had a few beers in one of the Hotels .

Tirta Mandala Hotel

We stayed at this very uinique hotel built on pylons over the waterside of the harbour. Its a great spot for watching the nightly procession of fishing boats on their way out- and convenient if you arrive by boat. They also have a Dive Centre and Dive Boats.

Back to PNG

In the morning we got up early and visited the local fish markets getting plenty of great photos as the nights fishing boats returned with their catches. We did a bit of trolling on the way back to Vanimo.
We cleared Imigration back into PNG on the beach of Vanimo.
After lunch we flew off down the coast and over the Sepic River and its delta to Madang.
